I’ve talked before about my love for my little city of Prior Lake. I love the small town community feel you get here while still enjoying all the perks of life near a big city.
I’ve also spoken in the past of my passion for shopping local. While there are a lot of bigger stores I patronize, I think it’s important to support the business owner who’s putting their livelihood on the line to pursue a dream (not to mention the fact that you can find such unique items when shopping with a hometown retailer).
You can imagine my excitement when a new shop pops up in town – and when it’s a REALLY great one, I’m over the moon.
I fell in love with Circa Vintage the minute I stepped through the door. The owner, Marie, has collected an amazing array of new and old, and mixed them together with an eye for detail that makes you feel right at home. With vintage home goods that’d look perfect in my family room, and brand new clothing that makes me want to call a sitter and schedule date night with my husband – there’s nothing NOT to love about this place. You can get jewelry for a steal, and great pieces from local artists hang from the wall. All in all, it’s lovely.
When I stopped by to take pictures, I didn’t get much time to chat with Marie – I was thrilled to see that she was too busy ringing up sales. Apparently I’m not the only one who has fallen in love with Circa Vintage.
Handbags from years past line the shelves.
A local artist’s (Jocelyn Polley) work is displayed on the wall.
A happy customer signs the guestbook while Marie rings her up.
Each time I’ve visited, the store has looked completely different. Merchandise blows out the door quickly, so if you see something you love, be sure to buy it before it’s gone.
I had the chance to get a behind the scenes feel for what the store is all about when Marie and I talked the other day. Read on to see our conversation.
What inspired you to open the store?
I’ve always been interested in vintage things. My whole life I’ve collected things – things would end up in my house. I’d hoard things. Last summer I’d have vintage sales on my front lawn (in Prior Lake) once a month. When the space opened up, it seemed like the right time to open a store.
Where do you find the items to sell?
Everywhere and anywhere, nothing’s off limits. People will often come in with things to sell too.
Is the clothing in your store new or vintage?
It’s mostly new – we actually take votes on the Facebook page on potential items, and the ones with the most votes get in-store. It gives me an idea of what people are looking for.
What led you to open in Prior Lake?
I was born and raised in Prior Lake. My whole family lives here, and I actually live just two blocks from the store.
Do you sell online as well as in-store?
We don’t currently sell online, but we often sell things over the phone. The Facebook page and website are updated with pictures, so people will call in with requests. We will ship anywhere!
