Dear Avery,

A week from today, middle school starts.

Middle school – it’s crazy! How are you old enough for this? I know for certain that I am not ready for this.

But you are.

I’ve watched you grow and mature in incredible ways this summer. Whereas the tween years started out dicy for us, with lots of hormones going on, and mood swings to match, these last few months have seen you evolving into a super cool young lady – one with whom I so enjoy spending time.

You are so weird… in all the best ways. You’re quirky and silly and you tell the best stories of anyone I know. The way your imagination works astounds me – you’re so creative. You are so fun to be around!

I know you’re feeling a little nervous about this year. It’s a new school, and a new district for you. But you’re going to rock this transition. I can’t wait to see all that you learn and do, meet your new friends, and hear about your daily adventures there.

I’ll be praying daily that you somehow escape the girl drama that often happens during this stage of life. I’m hoping for strong friendships with girls who will lift you up and be there for you. Be a good friend to others and likeminded people will find you.

I’m also praying that your teachers see your strengths and encourage them, while helping you to work on areas that could use it. Be open to change and you’ll continue to go far.

I love you Avery. But even more than that – I like you. I’d pick you for a friend if I was your age. And I’m excited to see our mother/daughter friendship continue to blossom. Don’t get me wrong – I will discipline the heck out of you whenever you need it because I’m still more your mom than your friend. But I love that this stage includes a different type of relationship for the two of us. One that’s a more grown up version of what we’ve had before.

Because you’re growing up. I hate it, because I’d love to have you with me forever. But I love it because I absolutely love who you are, and who you are growing into.

Cheers to a new school year! I can’t wait to see all that it brings for you.
