We’ve had some changes go on around here.
If you follow us on Instagram, then you may already know what I’m talking about.
After years of hoping it would come to be, we had our carpet pulled out in our family room, and now the majority of our main floor is American Walnut hardwood. When we moved in, we had a two year old and planned to have more kids, so we wanted soft carpeting for them to crawl around on. Now that they’re older, we don’t have the same need, and instead I chose pretty over family friendly.
It was not a fun process (and actually is ongoing – though I won’t bore you with the details of how many mistakes were made, and how much longer it took to complete than it should have).
But we are out of our basement and enjoying the look of our new room. Well – at least some of us are. Ed is still not sure about the ‘polar bear pelt’ on the floor (it’s actually sheepskin). And at least once a day, he sighs to himself and says, “I miss our carpet.”
The rest of us, however, are big fans. Judging by how often the kids roll around on that ‘pelt’ it seems that they’re liking it anyhow.
After much debate, we chose a water seal without stain for the finish, and I’m so glad we did. Our hardwood had aged to an orangey tone because of the oil based seal it was originally finished with – not pretty. I’m promised that the water seal should stay more true to the color it is now, though it may darken a bit. It’s brightened up the space considerably, especially in our kitchen. Someday I’ll show you before and after photos of that room – it’s still a work in progress.
For now, we are content with the one project that’s been completed, and the modern feel it gave our home.
