The Flop

March is nearly here, and it’s a month filled with parties – all three kids’ birthdays fall in the same week.

It got me thinking about the many parties we’ve hosted over the years. We love opening our home to friends, so there have been quite a few of them.

But one stands out in our memories. It’s the one we affectionately refer to as The Flop.

Now, when we host a party, we like to make sure we have more than enough food and drinks – better to have too much than to run out, right?

So when we had 38 people RSVP yes, we planned accordingly (and made sure we had enough for the extra stragglers who were sure to come as well).

The night arrived, and the phone started ringing, “I’m so sorry, but…”

Babysitters cancelled.

Kids got sick.

There was car trouble.

Phone call after phone call from friends with legitimate reasons for not joining us came in. All in all, we had fewer than 10 people at a party where we expected a fairly large crowd.

The good news is that we enough apps left to cover dinners and lunches for a week, and beer and wine have a  long shelf life. We’ve redeemed ourselves since then with successful parties, but The Flop goes down in history as our worst ever.

Have you ever hosted a Flop?

By the way, my 3 year old daughter took the closeup photo below, so I just had to include it! This is Day 6 of my 7 Days/7Ways remix (see Day 5 here, Day 4 here, Day 3 here, Day 2 here, Day 1 here).

  1. Beautiful shots today! And I love the skirt.
Flops…hmmm. Not so much. It’s like everyone waits around for a party and then EVERYONE always shows up! lol.

  2. Nice work, S! You have serious photography talent in your family. Love it! I don’t have a party that stands out as a flop, but I do remember a party we had that ended with a blow torch and singed hair…I’m also embarrassed to admit we weren’t in our twenties when this party happened!

  3. I love those cute shoes – they take the whole outfit up a notch!

I don’t host parties very often, but when I do I always get really nervous that no one will show. I think it’s because people are so terrible at RSVPs, which I don’t understand. Luckily, people always seem to show up!

  4. Love the skirt! Great blog you have here. I’m your newest follower 🙂 Would you mind checking out our blog & following back via GFC and Bloglovin’? Looking forward to your next post! xx

  5. Love this outfit! And that pictures your 3 year old took is so pretty! She did a good job! I don’t have a whole lot of parties under my belt yet, so nothing that stands out as a flop. My best friend and I did cook an entire Thanksgiving dinner for 15 out of a dorm kitchen though. I call that one a win!
