Welcome back to our WR Fitness Series.

We want to know, Are you still working on your New Year’s Resolution? Are you still committed to keeping your body healthy? My friend, Sarah Swanson {training out of Eden Prairie, MN} wants to check in with you and give you a few tips of her trade. She is a Group Fitness Instructor at Lifetime Fitness and the Eden Prairie Community Center.

“Some of us have stuck to our New Year’s resolutions of working out more, losing a few pounds, eating better etc. Some of us have not been doing to well and we might need a little extra motivation to keep us on track. You could Find a Personal Trainer that will help you with reaching your goals and setting targets, then when you come to do it on your own, you could buy a device to keep yourself motivated.

One suggestion is a band or device you wear on your wrist or that can clip onto your belt, necklace or other piece of clothing. These devices can track steps, calories burned, sleep patterns and are accompanied with an app for your smart phone than can sync up with other fitness apps that track your workouts and food intake. Here are a few: UP by Jawbone, Fitbit One, Withings Pulse, Fitbit Flex, Nike Fuel and Polar Loop. All are similar with a few differences.

My husband and I chose to go with the UP for 2 reasons:

1. Upon researching the other devices the app that UP offered seemed superior

2. We knew several people with UP bands, who liked them

Here are some of the fun things the UP Band can do… all other devices are very similar, so do your own research and choose the best one for you….

See where you are at for the goals you have set for yourself. Check out where your teammates are in their goals.

You can take a look back over the days, weeks or months and see any patterns.

Sarah Swanson 3If you like detail, you can see exactly where you were in your steps or sleep throughout the day at any given time.

Based on how many steps or your sleep patterns you get tons of cool insights and articles that may help you move more or sleep better…. Can you tell that I might need a little more sleep?

THE POWERNAP mode: This is my favorite feature of the UP band. I think a few other devices also have this feature. It takes your sleep information and computes what your optimal nap time would be. Research shows that longer naps are not always better, and really who has time for a 2 hour nap every afternoon. I use this feature if I am dragging and put it into the power nap mode and it wakes me up anywhere from 19 to 27 minutes later. I usually wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the rest of my day.

It celebrates with you when you have achieved a milestone!

Whether you need extra motivation to get moving or if you would like to track your sleep, I highly recommend a device like this. Being a Group Fitness Instructor I have talked to many people that have them and I have not found 1 person that regrets getting a device like this. They are fun and motivating and will help keep you accountable and on track for your fitness goals.”

This is one crazy device, I’m totally impressed! Thanks Sarah for sharing with us.

Do you have a favorite fitness tracking system?
