As you may have noticed from our Fitness Series, around here we are wild about having a healthy lifestyle (you can check out those posts here: HIIT, Zumba, finding your device, the Vikings Cheerleader workout, making time for yourself, pumping it up, and the SMART workout).

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle also includes the food that you’re putting in your body, so we wanted to share a favorite recipe, as well as a comparison of some protein drinks that are designed to re-fuel your body after a workout.

The four that we taste tasted were: JCore, P90x Shakeology via Lisa at Solid at my Core, Muscle Milk, and Only Protein.

For me, the P90x Shakeology drinks have the best variety of flavors – there’s everything from strawberry to smooth orange (though JCore has a yummy lemonade flavor as well).

If you’re a chocolate lover, Only Protein has both a mocha flavor and a traditional chocolate. My husband likes to mix a little all natural peanut butter in and blend the chocolate flavors with some ice.

I love that JCore has the added bonus of a patented appetite curbing ingredient, since I tend to get really hungry after a hard workout.

But my personal preference is not to consume much soy. I don’t like the added hormones that come along with soy, so P90x and Only Protein are my more likely options.

My favorite way to consume my protein is in a shake. I make one almost every day – it’s a great way to get in my fruit and veggie servings for the day, and the kids love them too! 2 carrots

1 generous sized handful of spinach

1 cup frozen organic pineapple

1 cup frozen organic berry mix

2 cups coconut milk

1/4 cup coconut kefir

the juice of one lime

the juice of one lemon

1 scoop vanilla protein powder

Blend, and enjoy (while pretending you’re on a warm beach somewhere). Serves 4.

  1. I eat a lot of soy as a vegetarian. I just make sure it’s not processed soy…I have heard good things about the Beach Body Shakeology, but hadn’t heard of the P90X one. It’s nice to read the reviews here – if I ever try them out, I will check back here.
