Bike & Helmet Rack ~ Weekend DIY

September 1, 2015

After everyone LOVED the Garage Mudroom ~Weekend DIY, we got lots of inquiries about the bike rack sitting along side it. So, this post is for all of you!

My super smart husband created this simple weekend DIY to hold more than just bikes.

This baby also organizes messier small items, such as, helmets, scooters and roller blades. Making our never-ending organization struggle one step closer to achieving garage utopia.

{List of Supplies}

12 – 2×2 cedar deck spindles

7 – 2x4x8 pressure-treated pine lumber

Small boxes of 2″ and 3″ wood screws

There was a lot of trial and error that went into figuring out the proper spacing for 6 bikes of every size, but eventually he settled on the best dimensions for our needs.

{Measurements}Bike & Helmet Rack DIY measurements

Ours is 88.75″ wide, 37.5″ high and 20″ deep, but you can adjust based on your bikes.

The spindles are 3″ apart, keeping each tire snug so the bikes don’t fall over. The pairs of spindles for each bike are spaced 10.25″ apart to allow room for the bikes to fit comfortably next to each other.

The 2 – 2×4’s running lengthwise along the bottom of the rack are 9″ apart to ensure the front tires are off the floor.

The 6 – 2×4 helmet holders are 12″ long.  Jason chose to use cedar and pressure-treated lumber so the rack could handle the rain and snow if we ever decided to move it outside.

{Disclaimer} My husband wanted to make sure everyone knew that the rack itself is very square.  It just appears crooked because our garage floor slopes away from the house.  He recommends laying it flat on the floor and using a framing square or measuring and comparing the opposite corners to keep the rack straight.  Sometime down the road we may stain it grey to match the garage mudroom, but again… that’s another project for another day.

Now, we just need to get the girls to return their helmets and sweet rides back to their designated homes each night. We can dream right?

    1. He grew up building houses with his dad and grandpa… that’s why he went to law school… so he didn’t have to do this ever again. Ha! I guess he couldn’t escape it forever. Oh well, it’s different if you’re doing it for fun and not for a career. 🙂 Thanks for your sweet comments! xo T
