Turns out I only like the idea of running but the actual execution is a struggle. Why is it so difficult to put on running shoes and go out the front door? Sounds easiest enough to me… It isn’t.
So after forcing myself to run last week I began reflecting back. Reflecting on a random statement I overheard my daughter tell my husband after a family night at the gym.
Granted I’ve always been on the competitive side – I know I like to win – but come on, who doesn’t right? Despite that, I thought maybe the drive had lessened over the years. Evidentially, that is not the case in certain situations. As it turns out my competitive tendencies have manifested themselves differently. The younger me needed to win every argument, win every race and be involved with every activity & club. Nowadays I tell myself I’m older and wiser. Thoughtfully and carefully choosing my battles – most of the time.
Nevertheless, after one of my painfully pathetic runs, I replayed a conversation I’d overheard a few months ago.
Jilli, How was Zumba tonight?
Well, it was embarrassing.
Because mom gets WAY too into it and it’s like she’s competing against someone…
Wait. What? That is completely ridiculous! I don’t even watch anyone else. On the contrary, I end up doing the wrong moves or run into people because I’m sooo involved in my own moves. Oooh, there it is. She’s right. I compete with myself. Whereas others may compare themselves to their neighbor, I compete with the mirror. And the dance battle is on folks! That chic in the mirror is going down. (And Hey – You were embarrassed of ME?! Humph.)
On the positive side, it gets me up and moving. I’ve been told I become a different person on the dance floor. ha. In the blink of an eye the hour is over – I’m sweaty, exhausted and feeling accomplished. And who wins these so-called dance jams? No one will ever know.
Speaking of gold star winners – check out the new spring-y goodness popping up in the shop lately! I’m shown here wearing this Cold Shoulder Navy Dress as a tunic over white skinnies, but plan to have my daughter wear it for Easter Sunday. Whoop whoop – gotta love double duty clothing! My favorite. (Jeffrey Campbell loafers c/o shopbop.com)
